Safety Protocol

The board has put together a Safety Protocol that must be followed by each team. The POW infection prevention guidelines are designed to minimize the risk of spreading all unwanted germs, including COVID and other infections. Every POW handler MUST follow the POW Safety Protocol; in addition, teams may have to adjust to their facilities’ requirements. In the event a facility and POW have differing policies on the same topic, the more conservative of the two shall apply. We will be guided by CDC Guidelines.

Safety Protocols for Every Pets on Wheels Therapy Animal Visit:

  • Handler health and requirements. Handlers must be in good health to visit. If a handler knows they have been exposed to coronavirus or another contagious illness, or a member of their household is currently ill, they must suspend visiting temporarily. We recommend that you are fully vaccinated against COVID.
  • Hand hygiene. The handler will carry hand sanitizer to visits and have it available should someone ask for it.
  • Posted precautions. Teams are not permitted in any rooms with posted airborne, droplet, or contact precautions.
  • Grooming. All animals are groomed, clean and well brushed prior to a visit.
  • Barriers. If a therapy animal’s paws will be placed on facility furniture, such as a chair or bed, or a small animal is placed in a lap or bed, a barrier that is not shared between clients must be used.
  • Toys and treats. ONLY the handler should handle items that go into the animal’s mouth, such as toys and treats. Treats are strongly discouraged during a visit; we suggest that they be given after the visit as a reward.
  • Animal health and requirements. Animals must be in good health to participate in visits. This includes being free of internal and external parasites. Your animal’s health certificate and license must be current and on file with Pets on Wheels.
  • Leashes, harnesses, bandanas, etc. The animal must be on a 4ft or less leash. Leashes must be handled only by the handler. POW bandanas may be worn by the animal.
  • Prudent social distancing. Social distancing (6 feet) refers to limiting the proximity and contact between two or more people. Therapy animal visits assume some level of contact between clients and the therapy animal team. However, when proximity is not necessary, social distancing is still recommended. During visits, a handler is not to socially distance themselves from their pet as physical nearness to their pet is a critical component to the pet’s welfare. Primary focus is eyes on your dog especially when there are distractions or socializing. Pets at events need to respect another team’s personal space and remain two feet from each team whenever possible. Social interacting of the animals is not permitted while they are working.

Two foot-rule: Handlers must have their attention on their pets at all times, never distancing themselves from their pet as physical nearness to their pet is a critical component to the pet’s welfare. Pets must be kept at least 2 feet from other animals at all times while representing Pets on Wheels on a visit or event to discourage play, to ensure that pets have enough personal space for focusing on the person being visited, and to prevent any interaction that could possibly lead to an injury to a third party, the handlers or their pets. A team’s personal space must be respected at all times.

I will follow all of the above Safety Protocols of Pets on Wheels of Scottsdale as well as any and all Safety Protocols of any facility I visit.

Waiver For Volunteers

I am entering into this Waiver knowingly and on my own behalf. I agree that along with my pet, I am volunteering in the Pets on Wheels of Scottsdale (POW) Visiting Therapy Dog Program entirely at my own risk and assume all risk and full responsibility for my own health, well-being, and safety, as well as that of my pet, during all visitations and events that we participate in. I fully agree that POW and its Board of Directors are in no way liable for any present or future COVID exposure or other infection, disease, or medical condition incurred at any time by any person, in attendance or not in attendance, during or after any visit or event. I hereby waive and release POW, its Board of Directors, and other POW volunteers from any and all liability for damages or personal injury to me, my pet, or my property.

I am fully aware of the risks involved in volunteering with POW, entering the Facilities, and being in the presence of other people with possible infections, including COVID. I further understand that compliance with the protocols for infection, including COVID, will not eliminate these risks, even with social distancing and other safety measures in place at the Facilities. Notwithstanding the foregoing, I elect to voluntarily participate in entering the Facilities with full knowledge that doing so may be detrimental to my health and/or my pet’s health.

As a condition of my being allowed to volunteer, I will fully comply with any health and safety protocols and mitigation measures implemented by POW as well as any facility or event that we participate in. If I test positive for COVID or other infections, or am exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or other infections, I agree to notify POW immediately and cease all volunteering with POW until medically appropriate to return.

I voluntarily assume full responsibility for any risks of loss or personal injury, including serious illness, injury, or death, that may be sustained by me or by others who come into contact with me, as a result of my presence in the Facilities or at events, whether caused by the negligence of POW or otherwise.

I INDEMNIFY and HOLD HARMLESS POW, its Board of Directors, and volunteers from any and all liabilities or claims made as a result of my participation. If I, or anyone for whom I am financially responsible, require medical treatment as a result of my participation, I agree to be financially responsible for all costs incurred as a result of such treatment.

I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A RELEASE OF LIABILITY of POW, its Board of Directors, and Volunteers AND AGREE THAT IT IS VALID FOREVER. It is my express intent that this Waiver binds; (i) the members of my family and spouse, if I am alive, and (ii) my heirs, assigns, and personal representatives, if I am deceased. I understand that this Waiver does not apply to any claim that, as a matter of law, cannot be released by private agreement. If any of the provisions, terms, or clauses of this Waiver is declared illegal, unenforceable, or ineffective in a legal forum, those provisions, terms, and clauses shall be deemed severable, such that all other provisions, terms, and clauses of this Waiver shall remain valid and binding upon both parties.

I agree that any controversy or claim between me, POW, its Board of Directors, and other Volunteers arising out of or relating to this Waiver or my presence at the Facilities during the COVID pandemic shall be resolved by confidential, final, and binding arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”) pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”).

By signing this Waiver, I waive my right to commence, or be a party to any class actions or collective claims against the Releasees. I agree that this Waiver shall be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Arizona without giving effect to any laws, rules, or provisions that would cause the application of laws of any jurisdiction other than those of the State of Arizona.

I CERTIFY THAT I HAVE READ THIS DOCUMENT; AND I FULLY UNDERSTAND ITS CONTENT. I AM AWARE THAT THIS IS A RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND A CONTRACT, AND I SIGN IT OF MY OWN FREE WILL.

Pets On Wheels of Scottsdale

Volunteer Pledge

1. I understand that considerable effort, volunteer time, and expense go into the administration of the Pets on Wheels of Scottsdale program.

2. I understand that, if I and the other volunteers carry out an honest commitment to visit regularly, those we visit will enjoy the greatest benefits, our pets will enjoy the regular outings and socialization.

3. I have carefully considered my weekly schedule and priorities, as well as the nature and personality of my pet, and hereby, make a commitment to make every possible effort to only visit my designated care center(s) weekly. I may be invited to attend optional special Pets on Wheels events (i.e. pet parades, school de-stressing events, etc). Visiting any other locations will require special permission from the Pets on Wheels President and/or Board of Directors.

4. Further, I will be rewarded, knowing that I am sharing the love and friendship my pet has given me, with others less fortunate, and knowing I am helping to make the overall program most effective.

5. I understand that the quarterly volunteer meetings are part of my training, and I will do my best to attend each meeting.

6. I will advise the Volunteer Coordinator if I cannot continue on a regular, dependable basis, if I will not be able to visit for an extended length of time or will have to quit for whatever reason. (Just let us know)

7. I have studied the visiting guidelines and will follow them carefully. By signing this pledge, I will do my best as a responsible volunteer.
